Of Caterpillars and Millkweed
I’ve been reading Letters From Eden: A Year at Home, in the Woods by Julie Zickefoose, and delightedly following her weblog. Her most recent post is a good example of what you’ll find there. Learn why monarch caterpillars are black and white with yellow, and marvel at the transparency of a chrysalis before the butterfly emerges. Don’t miss Everybody Loves Milkweed.
And more about Letters From Eden in a while, after I finish it. But I’ll just say that especially as someone who grew up in Northwestern Ohio, I’m especially in awe of of the work of Julie Zickefoose. And even though I have no intention of leaving my adopted state of California, my notion of Ohio as a wasteland bereft of wildlife and nature is completely challenged by her beautiful and inspiring book.
