Lead Bullet Ban Signed

In a spot of good news, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill on Saturday that requires hunters to use non-lead bullets in condor protection areas. This is a step towards preventing the lead poisoning that’s such a problem for these birds. Here’s a press release from the Center for Biological Diversity about the signing.

Condors, of course, aren’t the only animals subject to lead poisoning from bullets and sinkers used in fishing, although it seems to be more of a problem with carrion eaters. I volunteered at a wildlife rescue center years ago and helped tend to a Golden Eagle with lead poisoning. It was horrible to find such a magnificent bird laying on the bottom of a cage, barely conscious, and eventually succumbing to the poisoning.

Here’s another article, Schwarzenegger OKs lead-bullet ban from the Monterey Herald. I hadn’t realized that Fish and Game had asked him to veto the bill. Wouldn’t it be nice to replace Fish and Game with a new Fish and Animals?

  1. Would’t it be nice if the critter geeks knew something about nature?? You should ban anitfreeze, since that kills more animals then lead in the wild.

  2. Sounds like an excellent suggestion. Thanks, Ben!
