  1. I love the fetching bit about cats. When I moved to Seattle in the mid-80s, I house-sat and cat-sat for the first summer a woman who was taking a three-month hiking vacation in Colorado. I was studying for the bar exam, so lots of time was spent crumbling half-filled-in practice test answer pages in frustration and throwing them across the room. The second time I did this, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the cat dart out from underneath the sofa and pounce on the balled up paper. To my surprise, she picked it up like a kitten in her mouth and carried it back to me and dropped it at my feet. I couldn’t believe it; I had never heard of such a thing. Apparently the cat had never done this before, as the owner was as surprised as I was when I showed her on her return.

  2. That’s interesting…I wonder if there’s something behind the behavior? I can’t think of why a cat (or dog, for that matter) would do that in the wild. Maybe it *is* related to the way the carry their babies, an instinct to return them if they wander?
